Quite the storm yesterday. Took the river from a gentle flow of 240 cfs all the way up to 38000 cfs and left a good bit of damage by flood in its path. Route 86 to wilmington closed due to wash out at construction by Owens Brook, route 73 to Keene Valley closed as the East Branch and Johns Brook jumped their banks. Things are starting to settle down but this week will be all about ponds and lakes and we'll get back to the rivers maybe by the weekend.
Pictures and videos can be seen on our facebook page.
Fishing conditions remain pretty solid due to a little rain yesterday. Water levels are nice and water temps are starting out in the low sixties. The trico spinner has been the main attraction in the am. Isonychia and stoneflies remain on the menu and the ubiquitous blue wing olive has made its presence known when the cloud cover is plentiful.
Bass and pike also pretty active though time of day has become more important with evenings and early mornings being best.
Lake trout fishing on Placid is still a strong option and get this, Zac landed a twenty plus pound fish on Friday. I guess he didn't but his very happy clients did!
Good shot of rain yesterday and today raised the river and turned it off color but... the fishing was great this morning with a few beauties landed on streamers. Water temps are in the mid sixties and things should settle down overnight. Our Lake placid trips have yeilded two fish over seven pounds in the last two days, if these are the dog days of summer then I say woof woof!
Looks like another great weekend on tap with some scattered thunder etc. etc., same forecast as last week and probably the same forecast for next week. I will say that the fishing has remained pretty good in the Ausable. Water temps in the low sixties to start the day and plenty of tricos and isonychias to keep the fish and fisherman happy. The levels are at seasonal norms which means low but not bad, all in all good stuff for mid summer.
Pike and bass fishing has also been good and our Lake Trout trips on Placid are still producing, particularly the morning action. Get up here and get in on some of this action, i'll be complaining about the snow before you know it.
Rain yesterday brought the river up a touch but it is clear and in good shape for mid summer. The fishing was decent this morning with stonefly nymphs, isonychia nymphs and even streamers moving a few fish. Tricos are also on if you want to go to the other end of the spectrum. Water temp early this am was 64. We are consistently catching lakers on our Lake Placid trips and the bass and pike fishing has been pretty good too. Not to shabby for mid summer!!!
The river has come back down to seasonal flows and it seems as though the worst of the heat is behind us. We are expecting a coolish night tonight and lows in the forties tomorrow night. That will cool the river nicely allowing us to get out there with renewed enthusiasm. Tricos, olives and the ole grasshopper will see you through the early part of the week.
The West Branch was up and dirty after yesterday's rains but has since cleared and left us with nice water levels and water temps were 63 this morning. We are expecting a bit of a warm spell the next three days with temps in the upper 80's. This will make the fishing difficult and for the fish's sake it's best to limit fishing to the cooler morning hours. It's not that you can't catch fish later in the day it's just a lot tougher for the fish to recover from the fight and then catch and release becomes a lot more like catch and kill. Do the right thing!
Great mountain weather! forties at night and mid seventies during the day, perfect for sleeping and oh by the way, trout fishing. Morning water temps on the Ausable are right around sixty and the fish have been responsive. Stoneflies and white wulffs will bring a fish to the surface in the pockets and olives and sulphur spinners are getting it done on the flats. Water levels are at a seasonal flow and I must say we have pretty good conditions for mid July. Lake, stream, pond pick one and get out there while the getting is good!
